Roblox experience thumbnails are 1920×1080 pixels (16:9). Game icons, game passes and badges are 512×512 (1:1). YouTube thumbnails for Roblox videos are 1280×720 (16:9), under 2 MB. Those three numbers cover almost every case. The table below has the rest — minimums, formats, and where each image actually shows up. Which size should I export?
These get mixed up constantly, and uploading one into the other’s slot is why so many experiences have a stretched or cropped tile. Pick the slot first, then the pixels:
- Game icon — 512×512. The square tile in search, the games feed, and your profile. One per experience. Design for about 150×150 on screen.
- Experience thumbnail — 1920×1080. The wide gallery image on the experience page. Up to ten per experience; the first one is the cover.
- YouTube thumbnail — 1280×720. YouTube’s rule, not Roblox’s, and the file must stay under 2 MB. A 1920×1080 render downscales cleanly. See YouTube’s thumbnail specs.
Why the exact ratio matters
Roblox crops or letterboxes anything that is not the expected aspect ratio. A 16:10 render uploaded as a thumbnail loses a strip off the top and bottom — usually your character’s head. A rectangular image uploaded as an icon gets squeezed into a square.
Render at the ratio you need rather than cropping afterwards. If you want headroom for a later crop, render 3840×2160: that is still 16:9, and it downscales to 1920×1080 without softening.
Design rules that survive small sizes
- One focal point. A single character mid-action reads better than three ideas crammed into one tile.
- Contrast between subject and background. A rim light or an outline around your character is what makes it pop at feed size.
- Test at 150×150. That is roughly how big your icon actually is in the feed. Text that is unreadable there is text nobody reads.
- Keep detail out of the corners on anything circular — badges, group logos, and every profile picture.
Export and upload checklist

- Pick the aspect ratio first. Choose 16:9 for an experience thumbnail or a YouTube thumbnail, and 1:1 for a game icon, game pass, badge or profile picture. Getting the ratio right up front is what stops Roblox cropping your render.
- Render at the recommended size. Export 1920×1080 for 16:9, or 512×512 for 1:1. Rendering larger — 4K at 16:9 — is safe and downscales cleanly.
- Save as PNG under 2 MB. PNG preserves hard edges and text, and supports transparency if you plan to composite the render onto another background. Keep the file under 2 MB so Creator Hub and YouTube accept it.
- Check it at display size. Shrink the image to roughly 150×150 for an icon, or to the width of a feed tile for a thumbnail. If it is illegible small, it is illegible.
- Upload it in the right slot. In Creator Dashboard, open your experience, then Configure — the icon and thumbnail slots are separate uploads. Wait for moderation; it usually clears within a few minutes.
